Marc van der Merwe

Meet Marc, a 28-year-old surfer and shaper from South Africa. He's been surfing since 2002 and started shaping his own boards in 2017.

He quickly became a full-time shaper and now dedicates all his time and energy to creating the perfect wave-riding machines, with an environmentally-friendly approach. He started shaping with the idea of making boards that rival the performance of modern construction while being environmentally friendly. He began by shaping hollow wooden boards and quickly moved on to upcycling old boards such as snapped longboards and learn to surf boards, finishing them with cork and a wooden veneer. However, he still wanted something more lively and loose, so he started shaping standard custom EPS Epoxy boards. He continues to upcycle old boards while also working on custom EPS Epoxy boards. His inspiration comes from his friends and his lifelong love for surfing.
Marc creates custom models by hand, but for repetition work, he uses a machine for efficiency and does his own glassing. This legend can shape any type of blank presented to him. His boards are sought after by surfers of all skill levels while being respected in the local surfing community for his passion, commitment, and environmentally-friendly approach to shaping the perfect boards.
